MONTAGUE — A 72-year-old man reported missing during the SNIRT Run in Lewis County was found deceased in the woods on Sunday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. The SNIRT Run is a long distance ATV ride across the county, marking the end of snowmobile season and the start of a muddy ATV season.

Sheriff's deputies said Frederick Moat, 72, of Kirkwood, Broome County, was one of thousands of off-road and ATV riders taking part in the 17th annual event on Saturday.

By 9:17 p.m. Saturday, deputies said Moat had been reported missing by his family. Sheriff's deputies partnered with state Forest Rangers to canvass the area, and the search continued into the daylight hours on Sunday.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, authorities said Moat's 2020 Polaris ATV was found abandoned and stuck off a driveway far off the west shoulder of Salmon River Road in Montague. The search moved to that area and deputies said Moat's body was found sometime later in a heavily wooded area.

Multiple local rescue agencies assisted in the search, along with numerous volunteer riders from in and around Lewis County, authorities stated.
