TOWN OF WEBB — Boaters on Fourth Lake helped rescue a man suffering a medical emergency in the water in Herkimer County Wednesday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

Webb Police Chief Ronald Johnston said 37-year-old Jack M. Canning, of Massachusetts, was swimming near the sand bar at about 2:20 p.m. when he suffered “an unknown type of medical emergency.”

Canning was holding a 3-year-old child at the time, and both he and the child went into the water, authorities said.

Other family members grabbed the child, who was unharmed, while boaters in the area pulled Canning out of the water and started CPR, the chief stated.

“Resuscitation efforts were successful,” Johnston stated.

He added that an off-duty Utica Fire Department lieutenant was in the area and helped revive Canning.

Canning was then air-lifted to University Hospital in Syracuse, where the chief said he is in
stable condition.
