Utica Blue Sox score big win over rival DiamondDawgs

UTICA — The Utica Blue Sox avenged a previous loss to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in a big way on Saturday evening, earning a 11-3 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League win on Pink the Park Night, raising money for the American Cancer Society.

The visiting DiamondDawgs struck first with three runs in the first inning at Murnane Field. That was all they would get however. The Utica offense came alive in the third inning scoring one to make it a 3-1 deficit.

The run in the third started a streak of five consecutive innings in which the Blue Sox would score, highlighted by five runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Utica's Brandon Peterson — who recently pitched at P27 Academy in South Carolina and is committed to New Jersey IT — pitched two innings, allowing three hits and three runs along with three walks and three strikeouts. He has a 3.42 ERA in six games with the Blue Sox.

Avery Lee and Lucas Schramm were Utica’s top two run producers with a pair of RBIs each, while Sam Thompson earned the win in relief, going three innings and only allowing one hit.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill grad Dewey Roden had a walk and a run. Entering Monday, he was batting .340, which ranked 14th in the 16-team collegiate summer baseball league.

While the Blue Sox (25-15-1 overall) were idle Sunday, Batavia earned a win pushing the Blue Sox a game out of first place in the PGCBL's West Division. Utica is three games ahead of third-place Auburn. The top four teams in each division qualify for the postseason.

Including Monday and Tuesday's home-and-home against Watertown, Utica had six games remaining in the regular season, which ends Friday.

Utica and Mohawk Valley (24-18) are scheduled to play once more in the regular season. That game is scheduled 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Murnane Field.
