UTICA — The Utica Blue Sox have already clinched a playoff spot in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League postseason.

Now, it is about gaining momentum as the postseason looms.

In that sense, the Blue Sox missed an opportunity in a 7-2 setback Wednesday to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at Murnane Field in the final regular-season meeting between the local rivals. It was the second loss in as many games for Utica, which was 26-17 entering Thursday’s game against Amsterdam (37-6-1). Utica was 4-6 in the last 10 games entering Thursday’s contest.

Meanwhile, it was the third consecutive win for Mohawk Valley (27-18), which is 8-2 in the last 10 games.

Utica closes the regular-season with a planned doubleheader Friday against the Boonville Baseball Club. That team (12-28) has already been eliminated from postseason contention.

On Wednesday, Mohawk Valley never trailed against Utica, which got both of its runs in the seventh inning.

The DiamondDawgs scored once in the first inning and two more in the third. Mohawk Valley then added a three-run fourth-inning and another run in the fifth.

New York Mills native and Utica Notre Dame grad Zach Brush — who plays at Le Moyne — was 1-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run. He was also hit by two pitches. Brush had 44 walks entering Thursday to lead all players in the 16-team league. His 36 runs are also fourth-most.

The DiamondDawgs allowed only six baserunners in the game. Four pitchers combined to allow three hits and totaled 12 strikeouts.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill grad Dewey Roden — who also plays college baseball at Le Moyne — had one of the hits for the Blue Sox. Entering Thursday, he was batting .333 in 33 games. That average ranks 15th among all players.

The top four teams from each of the PGCBL’s East and West divisions advance to the playoffs.

The single-game division semifinals are scheduled to played Saturday and Sunday with the division finals Monday. The finals, which are best-of-three, are set for Tuesday through Thursday.
