Black Knights stung by Hornets in softball

The Rome Free Academy softball team couldn’t string together hits in a 4-3 loss at home in non-league play to Fayetteville-Manlius Monday at Kost Field.

Though the RFA offense got on the board with a first inning run, the team managed only four hits in the next four innings without adding a run. Lauren Dorfman led off for RFA with a single, advanced on productive outs then scored on a wild pitch.

The Hornets, meanwhile tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth then took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Natalie Mayne led off the fourth with a triple then came in to score on an RBI single by Ella Keyes. The team had four hits in the fifth to take the lead, a leadoff triple by Megan Woodridge, an RBI single by Gwen O’Connor, a single by Paige Graves and then a two-run triple by Gracie Bishop all with no outs. RFA got out of the jam with no further damage.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Black Knights cut the lead to one. Kate Platis got a leadoff single. With one out, Dorfman got on via an error. Platis came home on a throwing error. Dorfman scored her second run of the game on an RBI groundout by Juliana Huckabone. That made it 4-3 in favor of F-M.

RFA got a leadoff single by Adrianna Varano in the seventh but she was stranded on second base as the potential tying run.

Laina Beer threw a complete game for RFA in the loss, allowing 12 hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts.

For F-M, Mayne went the distance, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts.

The loss knocked RFA to 1-3 on the season.

The Black Knights lost 5-3 Friday at home to Cicero-North Syracuse.

The teams each scored two in the first inning then C-NS put up three in the third. RFA got one run back in the fourth but it wasn’t enough.

Beer pitched for RFA, allowing three hits and walking eight while striking out seven.

Maggie Closinksi was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batter in. Dorfman had a hit and two walks with a run scored. Beer had a hit and an RBI.

Statistics for C-NS were not submitted.

The Black Knights were scheduled to travel to play a Tri-Valley League matchup at Utica Proctor at 4:30 today.
