Big fifth inning fuels Holland Patent baseball over Oneida on the diamond

The Holland Patent baseball team scored eight runs in the fifth inning to pull away for a 17-6 win over host Oneida on Monday afternoon in the non-league game.

Holland Patent had a 6-5 lead going into the fifth inning. The eight-run inning was helped by junior Alex McLaughlin’s two-run single for the Holland Patent, which improves to 3-3.

The team tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead.

Senior Caden Briggs helped lead the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Sophomore Luke Benedetto was 2-for-6.

Alexander Hoole, who was 2-for-5 at the plate, earned the win on the mound. He improved to 2-0 this season.

Junior Cole Meyers was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for Oneida (2-1 overall).

Holland Patent is next scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Clinton.

Oneida’s next scheduled game is 4:15 p.m. Monday against visiting Camden.

Oriskany edges Adirondack

Trailing 5-1 after four innings, the Oriskany baseball team rallied with two three-run innings to get an 8-6 win Friday on the road against Adirondack.

The Oriskany offense had eight hits and 11 walks. Karsten Bates had a single and double, a run and two runs batted in. Eddie Wright also had two hits, scored and had two RBIs.

On the mound for Oriskany, Anthony Kernan went three innings and allowed two runs, one of them earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out six. Wright went four innings in relief, allowing four unearned runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

For Adirondack, Brett Sanford had two hits, two RBIs and scored once. Colin White had a hit, three walks and scored three runs.

White threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, one of them earned, on five hits and four walks. He struck out six. Chris Strobel went 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks. Dylan Ludwikowski also went 1 1/3 innings, allowing an earned run on a hit and two walks. Gabe Cihocki went 2/3 of an inning, allowing an unearned run on a hit with one strikeout.

Oriskany was scheduled to play a non-league game Monday in Clinton. Results were not available at press time.
