On Sunday, Oct. 11, 46 parishioners, seven dogs and one cat gathered together for The Blessing of the Animals, a worship service held at Oneida First United Methodist Church.
Worship Leader Deb Brewer conducted the service. It is a long-standing tradition in the United Methodist Church to offer the Blessing of the Animals in honor of Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals.
Brewer read scripture telling the story of Jonah and the big fish and shared the account of God’s creation in Genesis 1. She also confirmed God’s love of all creatures great and small and the obligation for us to be the best stewards we can be for them. There was a responsive reading, prayers, and each animal received a blessing.
