Barn destroyed; 19 head of cattle perish in blaze

COPENHAGEN — A barn on Route 12 was destroyed by fire early Monday morning, with several cattle lost.

Copenhagen Fire Chief T.J. Williams said several 911 calls were received for a fully involved barn fire on Route 12, near Flemming Road, at about 3:15 a.m. Upon arrival, mutual aid was requested from Rutland, West Carthage and Lowville volunteer companies.

“Strong winds and precipitation made this a difficult fire to contain,” Williams said.

Nineteen head of cattle perished in the blaze.

The barn is owned by John Sullivan, of 10160 Route 12. It has been deemed a total loss, the chief said. Cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
