Our elected leaders showed moral courage by reforming New York’s bail, discovery, and speedy trial laws. It would have been easy to keep this system intact and allow for race and wealth-based jailing to continue. But the Democratic legislature stepped up and did the right thing.
Too many families and communities have been torn apart because of New York’s bail and discovery laws. These overdue reforms give our state a foundation to build on. The mass incarceration crisis is real, and we can’t afford to let the fear-mongering of “tough-on-crime” district attorneys drive public policy.
I see this as a huge step for our state and look forward to working toward the complete elimination of money bail. Only then will we no longer be jailing people based on the color of their skin or the money in their pocket.
