Bagg’s Square to receive parking expansion

UTICA — As Utica continues to grow, so does the need for amenities throughout the city.

Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri has been in contact with several business owners in the Bagg’s Square footprint who have raised concerns regarding the issue of parking availability.

To address those concerns, Palmieri was able to successfully receive funding provided by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York for a parking expansion initiative.

A new parking lot will be located at John and Broad streets, underneath the North Genesee Street bridge. The parking lot will consist of 130 public parking spaces and will include 26 lighting structures to keep the area well lit.

“How do you blend east Bagg’s Square with west Bagg’s Square, how do we blend in the ability to continue to grow?” Palmieri asked.

“One of the things that we have found that’s missing is parking. It’s a simple commodity that’s so very important.”

“It’s just a great opportunity for the city of Utica as we continue to grow,” the mayor added.

The parking lot will be free for the community to park their vehicles and walk to the local businesses along Bagg’s Square, as well as other areas of the city.

Palmieri stressed the importance of walkability as the city continues to undergo changes with renovations and initiatives.

Construction of the Bagg’s Square parking expansion is currently underway and is expected to be completed by November.
