Arson charged after wreath set on fire at Rome church
ROME — A 23-year-old man is accused of setting a wreath on fire upstairs at the First United Methodist Church in Rome Sunday afternoon, according to the Rome Police Department.
Police said the Rome Fire Department was dispatched to the North George Street church at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday for an item burning in an upstairs room at the church. Police responded to assist, and they said they found that a wreath had been set on fire on a table, causing fire damage to the wreath and table.
Several people had been inside the church at the time, and police said a description of a male suspect was obtained.
A search of the area found Anton W. Souzadelima, 23, of Rome, at the nearby Abraham House, where he was refusing to leave, police said. Souzadelima was taken into custody on one count of second-degree arson, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court.
