A team of local players will participate in the New York State High School Girls Basketball Tournament run by Syracuse Select at the New York State Fairgrounds outdoors on Aug. 29 and 30.

“It’s going to be a really fun environment,” said Jessica Medicis, who will coach the Utica area team. Medicis is the incoming head coach for the Westmoreland girls varsity basketball team.

The team will take on teams from Albany, Binghamton, Finger Lakes, Ithaca and Syracuse.

“The best of the best from their region,” Medicis said of the tournament. “I contacted a lot of the local coaches and had them nominate a couple players each, and not just from their own teams, she noted.

The Utica team will have 11 players.

There are three players from Rome Free Academy, where Medicis has been an assistant coach. The three rising seniors are guard Amya McLeod, who is on the verge of becoming the program’s second-highest scoring player; guard Alysa Jackson, who Medicis said is “complete defensive stopper;” and forward-center Mia Mirabelli, a tall but speedy scorer.

Medicis will also have two players from Westmoreland, rising senior center Gabby Moore and rising sophomore point guard Madalynne Enos point guard, who will be an top all-time scorer in the program over the next three years, Medicis noted.

Players from six other area schools will also play. There’s Mount Markham rising senior Caroline Entwistle, a top three-point shooter; Waterville rising senior center Natalee Collins, a key in the post; Poland rising senior guard-forward Logan Cookinham, who Medicis noted is strong but can play like a guard; Hamilton rising junior guard-forward Lindsey Speer; Little Falls rising sophomore guard-forward Alexis Kress and Herkimer rising sophomore guard-forward Madison Marusic.
