Area fire chief passes away

Willowvale Fire Chief and Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Smoulcey has passed away following a long battle with cancer, according to department officials.

Smoulcey is survived by his wife and their one child, with a second child on the way. Funeral arrangements are not yet available. Smoulcey has served with the Willowvale Fire Company for more than 20 years, and has worked in law enforcement for 16 years. He worked for the Kirkland Police Department before joining the Sheriff’s Office in September 2011.

“He was a great guy,” said Sheriff Robert M. Maciol. The sheriff said Smoulcey started with the Road Patrol, and “truly excelled” with the agency’s IT department.

“His pride and joy was all the work he did on our mobile command post,” Maciol said. “He was a really strong individual All the fight that he had with cancer, he came to work as much as he could. Amazing, the amount of strength he possessed.”

Calling hours and funeral service information is expected to be released this week.
