Area 4-H’ers demonstrate horse knowledge
WHITESTOWN — Even with mother nature forcing a date change the 2023 Regional Horse Bonanza at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Lewis County Office was a success for Oneida County 4-H members, chapter officials have announced.
The Regional Horse Bonanza consisted of a horse bowl, a knowledge contest in a quiz bowl format, and hippology, which gives youth an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of horse management through a written exam, stations slides and horse judging.
Senior Lanelle Vile, of Port Leyden, joined an Onondaga County Senior Team that placed second overall in the horse bowl and first overall in hippology.
Lanelle placed eighth in horse bowl and seventh in hippology. Oneida County’s two junior teams places first and second for horse bowl and hippology.
Among those placing in the horse bowl junior top 10:
- Emily O’Brien, of New Hartford;
- Eden Czajka, of Boonville;
- Ryleigh Stammers, of Boonville;
- Colin Sullivan, of Constableville;
- Isabella Barnhart, of Forestport;
- Melanie Beers, of Clinton;
- Dixie Wilson, of Boonville; and
- Martin Luther, of Port Leyden.
Among those placing in the hippology junior top 10:
- Emily O’Brien, of New Hartford;

- Dixie Wilson, of Boonville;
- Eden Czajka, of Boonville;
- Colin Sullivan, of Constableville;
- Melanie Beers, of Clinton;

- The Oneida County 4-H Novice Team placed second in horse bowl and first in hippology.
Grace Barrett, of Clinton, placed fourth in horse bowl and sixth in hippology. Sophia Arcuri, of Durhamville, placed seventh in horse bowl and third in hippology. Caleb Beers, of Clinton, placed sixth in horse bowl and fifth in hippology. Elijah Beers, of Clinton, placed fifth in horse bowl and sixth in hippology.
