HERKIMER — The Arc Herkimer will host a free, specialized training, Stop the Bleed, at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, at its offices at 350 S. Washington St.

The training is open to all community members at no charge. Individuals will gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and act quickly, focusing on three techniques of bleeding control that can be used to save a life, organizers said.

“Trainees will learn how to first use their hands to apply pressure to a wound before packing the wound to control bleeding, and, finally, correctly applying a tourniquet,” says Amanda Hocking, a registered nurse at Arc Herkimer and instructor for the course. “The course is predicated on empowering people of all different backgrounds to make a life-or-death difference in the event of bleeding trauma.”

The course may be of special interest to local nurses, first responders, firefighters, school personnel, and hunters, among others.
