All About Women welcomes new provider

Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Colleen A. Smith, FNPC, has joined Rome Medical Practice’s obstetrics and gynecology practice, All About Women. She is accepting new patients at the office located in the Beeches Office Complex, 7900 Turin Road.

“We are pleased to welcome Colleen to All About Women where she will be providing gynecological services,” said Rosemel Atkinson, vice president of physician practices at Rome Memorial Hospital.

“Colleen has been caring for women and their families for more than 21 years, including 14 years specializing in gynecological care, so she offers a wealth of experience and knowledge for the care of our patients.”

Smith graduated from SUNY Morrisville with a registered nursing degree.

After 10 years of nursing, including experience in emergency, intensive care and surgical recovery nursing, she earned certification as a family nurse practitioner through the Community General School of Nurse Practitioners in Syracuse.

“I decided to become a family nurse practitioner because I wanted to be able to offer personalized, hands-on, quality care for the patients I care for,” Smith said. “I like to be able to spend time getting to know my patients so we can work in collaboration toward the goal of maintaining their good health.”

Smith said that she is very proactive in her approach to healthcare, recommending health screenings and offering guidelines for a healthy lifestyle for her patients. She follows the most recent guidelines for Pap smears, which is every 3-5 years following three consecutive normal findings. She also recommends annual mammograms in conjunction with a physical breast exam for most patients over the age of 40.

“Annual gynecological exams are crucial for women,” Smith said. “It is not only important to track any changes in your overall and gynecological health, but it is also an important opportunity to speak with your healthcare provider about any issues or concerns you may have.”

“I like to take a laid back approach with my patients,” Smith continued.

“I want them to feel comfortable talking with me and asking questions. I want to be able to support them in any way I can to keep them healthy.”

Smith is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Mohawk Valley Nurse Practitioners Association.
