‘Airplane Tales II’ Wednesday at Rome Historical Society
ROME — Rome Historical Society, 200 Church St., will host the program, “Airplane Tales II” with aviation historian James “Jim” Coulthart, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21.
Airplane Tales II will dive into a collection of WWII aircraft anecdotes, incidents, and accidents with ties to Central New York and the Rome Army Airfield.
The stories involve aircraft with names like “Old Hellcat,” which was a B-26 Marauder used for a U.S. bond tour, and “Benancye,” the B-17 Flying Fortress that landed itself.
From the recounting of veteran pilots to plywood cargo planes, Coulthart has spent more than two years compiling family accounts, newspaper clippings, online resources, and official reports to develop the Airplane Tales series and illuminate the rich local aviation history.
This free program is part of Rome Historical Society’s third Wednesday programming.
