UTICA — Utica Municipal Housing Authority AmeriCorps Program and the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees will be holding an AmeriCorps member recruitment fair on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, 201 Bleecker St.
AmeriCorps members will help refugees, immigrants, and newcomers to find jobs and resources, and to overcome barriers that impede their adjustment to life in the United States.

Members may also apply online through https://my.americorps.gov. Applicants should use Internet Explorer, select the “Apply to Serve” button, and search the listings for the Utica Public Housing AmeriCorps Program.
Applicants must be willing to commit to 10 months of service, be 18 years of age or older, and have at least a high school diploma/GED.
Relevant volunteer/job experience and post-secondary education such as an Associate or Bachelor’s Degrees are preferred. Ability to speak other languages is not required, but would be a plus. AmeriCorps positions may also serve as internship experiences for college students. AmeriCorps members must pass background checks, have a passion to help others, committed to diversity, and possess qualities such as patience, empathy, tolerance, and a nonjudgmental attitude.
AmeriCorps is a 10 -month national service program requiring 40 hours a week, 1,700 total hours of volunteer service. Members receive a bi-weekly stipend before deductions and withholding, basic health coverage, valuable training and experience, an education award issued at completion of service, forbearance for qualified student loans, payment of interest on qualified student loans in forbearance, and childcare assistance for eligible members.
AmeriCorps is a program that engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country.
AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance, fringe benefits, an education award, health insurance, childcare, and professional development opportunities.
The program has both full and part-time slots available.
The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees AmeriCorps member will provide vocational training and employment assistance to refugees, immigrants, and newcomers.
They will work with community partners to facilitate relevant vocational training that is delivered in a culturally and linguistically relevant manner.
They will also help to implement the agency’s new Welcome & Opportunity Center, which will open January 2019.
The Center is designed to provide refugees, immigrants, and newcomers to the area information and access to area services, education and training opportunities, and the resources required to support meaningful integration, empower individuals and families to reach personal and economic goals, and create an inclusive environment where all can succeed.
