Ag producer roundtable looks at School Supported Ag program

Posted

MORRISVILLE — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida and Madison Counties are holding a producer roundtable discussion to determine the feasibility of the School Supported Agriculture (SSA) program.

The SSA program aims to connect schools with local producers to buy shares of the local farm operations, then receive locally grown food for school meals. Similar in style to a community support agriculture program. SSA shares could vary in size to accommodate classrooms of 50, 100 or 150 students or be larger kitchen shares.

Any local producer interested in supporting fresh farm foods within the school system is invited to join CCE Oneida and CCE Madison from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the CCE Madison County Ag Center, 100 Eaton St. in Morrisville. The roundtable discussion is to learn about the producers, their businesses and the potential opportunities for establishing an SSA agreement with a local school.
