The Adirondack girls nordic ski team won their first League Cup on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Osceola Ski Center.
The Wildcats were victorious over second place Camden, third place Old Forge, fourth place Whitesboro and fifth place Holland Patent.
In the 5K race, several racers skied extra distance due to confusing lap markers. Old Forge’s Olivia Hopsicker won with a big lead, but Adirondack athletes got back on track and came up in a pack. Aya Knitel placed second. Cora Hinsdill took fourth, followed closely by team captain Caroline Martin in fifth. Makayla Chambers took seventh, Jeanette Gifford was ninth, and Carli Charbonneau finished in 10th.
Six of the top 10 spots assured the Wildcats the cup.
Because of COVID-19, the state is not holding regional playoffs. Normally, the win would have assured Adirondack a Section III title and a trip to States for Knitel, Hinsdill, Martin, Chambers and possibly Charbonneau.
The team had three seniors this season: Martin, Chambers and Katherine Allen.
On the boys’ side, sophomore Karl Christianson finished in eighth place, and would have qualified to go to States as well. His younger brother Clayton finished a minute him. Freshman Aiden Korte had his best finish of the year taking 14th place.
