AAA warns of recent motor vehicle recalls
Due to recent Honda vehicle recalls because of defective air-bags, AAA is advising all drivers to check the recall status of their motor vehicles.
AAA officials said Honda issued a warning in February for more than 8,200 Honda and Acura vehicles manufactured between 2001 and 2003 that use defective Takata Alpha air bag inflators, which have a 50% failure rate. Officials said these air bags contain metal fragments that are hurled towards a driver’s face if the inflator ruptures.
Recalled Models: 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001-2002 Honda Civic, 2002 Honda CR-V, 2002 Honda Odyssey, 2003 Honda Pilot, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2 TL, and the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL.
In November, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles issued a recall for 2005 to 2010 Dodge Magnums, Chargers, Challenges and Chrysler 300s because of the same defective air bags, officials stated.
As of January 2021, about 67 million inflators were under recall for risk of explosion. Nineteen vehicle manufacturers were affected. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 50 million inflators have been repaired or accounted for. Twenty-four people have been killed and more than 400 injured from defective inflators.
Every Takata air bag under recall will be replaced for free, officials said. Although millions of recall notices have been sent to owners by mail, millions of vehicles still need to be fixed.
