Luge veteran Erin Hamlin smiled broadly Friday as she waved the American flag in front of the U.S. contingent at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.
It was a magic moment.
Those of us who have followed her stellar career will always remember it, along with her bronze medal and two world championships.
The young athlete from Remsen is retiring after these Olympics, and whatever she achieves at Pyeongchang will top off some terrific accomplishments.
Hamlin was the fourth member of the USA Luge team to carry the flag into an opening. Hamlin’s teammates were thrilled by the news of her selection, not only because of what it means for her but for what its means for luge.
We wish her the best. And we’re glad she took her brother’s advice — don’t drop the flag.
