MARTINSBURG — A Steuben County man was killed when his snowmobile crashed into a tree in Lewis County Saturday evening, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said Dean C. Cole, 54, of Cameron Mills, was riding on Trail C5A, Flat Rock Road, when his 2023 Polaris snowmobile went off the north side of the trail and struck a tree at 5:27 p.m. Saturday. Several witnesses in the area rushed to aid Cole and performed CPR until rescue personnel arrived.

Cole was taken to an area hospital, where authorities said he was pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation.
