SYRACUSE — The Upstate New York Poison Center is most worried about children unintentionally eating marijuana edibles, according to their recap of 2022.

Last year marked the Poison Center’s 65th year of service, and they answered nearly 50,000 cases for a variety of different poisons. Out of those, officials said they answered nearly 700 cases of cannabis products in all age groups, up from only 364 such cases in 2020.

Center officials said a majority of calls concerning marijuana edibles involved children ages 5 and under.

“Our goal is to prevent all poisonings from happening but, in the meantime, we will continue to educate our community about safe storage of cannabis products, medications and other potential poisons commonly available in people’s homes,” said Michele Caliva, administrative director.

The Poison Center advises parents and guardians to store their marijuana products away from children, possibly in a lock box.

Also notable in 2022, the Poison Center said 93% of all exposure calls happened at home, 14% were for suspected suicide, and the busiest months were January, May and July.

The top five poisonings for all age groups in 2022 were analgesics, like Ibuprofen; household cleaning products, hand sanitizers, antidepressants and sedatives.

The top five poisonings for children ages 5 and younger were household cleaning products, personal care products, like hand sanitizers; analgesics, foreign objects, like toys and silica gel; and dietary supplements.

The Poison Center advises all people to keep their medicines and household products locked away where children cannot see or reach; to store poisons in their original containers; to use child-resistant packaging; and to take your medicine where children can’t watch.
