The Daily Sentinel wrote about replacing the mural on the downtown building. How about a story about what happened here 202 years ago on July 4th?
Gov. Dewitt Clinton turned the first shovel of dirt that was to become the Erie Canal. As history has shown, it helped develop New York State as well as west of us. It wasn’t even mentioned in the paper. In the 1950’s it was taught in school but now in the age of rockets I don’t know if it is.
So let’s have a mural of the first shovel of dirt, a canal boat and the date it was started. Then let our city celebrate each year and invite the governor or Assembly speaker. Take pride Romans.
