Sam Morse of Camden crosses the finish line during the 45th Boilermaker Road Race on Sunday in Utica. Morse finished in 46:58.78, good for 21st place overall, and the best time among local runners. He finished second in 2021 in the race that was pushed back to October and was held without the invited elite runners.

The first wheelchair racer of the 45th Boilermaker Road Race to make the turn left from Memorial Parkway to Valley View Road was eventual winner Daniel Romanchuk. It was his fifth win in the Utica race.

Tricia Longo had the fastest time among women in the Boilermaker 5K Road Race on Sunday in Utica. Longo, from Waterford, NY, usually runs the 15K but dropped down because of the recent heat. She said she plans to be back in the 15K next summer.

Daniel Romanchuk is a four-time winner in the Boilermaker Road Race's wheelchair division. Romanchuk, a standout athlete, is in the Boilermaker field again. The field includes 38 participants, which is one of the bigger fields for the division at the Boilermaker. There are 10 female participants, which is among the most the race has had.

PARK MURAL — A new basketball mural featuring NBA and WNBA stars, such as Kobe Bryant and local star Brianna Kiesel, was painted near the basketball courts at Kemble Park in Utica by city codes director Marques Phillips. Each city councilperson was given money to upgrade areas in their respective districts and Councilman Venice Ervin decided to use a large portion on the park, with the mural being the first upgrade. Ervin talked with kids at the park to see who they would want on the wall and Phillips came up with the design and painted the image. New grills, seating and a performance stage is also planned for future additions to the park.

HONORED — Daily Sentinel photographer John Clifford was recognized with his own brick during a ceremony on Wednesday at Boilermaker Square at Butler Park in Utica. Clifford has been taking photos and covering the Utica Boilermaker for over 30 years as a photojournalist for the Sentinel. Clifford is the Boilermaker’s Les Diven Award recipient. The award is presented to someone in the media who provides exceptional coverage for the race and its connection to the community.
