Two Clinton youths receive 4H awards

WHITESTOWN — Today communication and information are right in our pockets and at our fingertips.

But at what price?

The loss of verbal communication? Add to that the fact that standing up and speaking in front of a crowd is often listed as a substantial fear of many.

In 4-H, youth learn the importance of verbal communication whether in the classroom, at an event or in the public arena. Then one day they carry these skills into the workplace. That’s what made this past weekend’s public presentations so important.

On March 30, 4-H youth participated in the North Central District Public Presentations event at Cornell Cooperative Extension building.

After advancing from the county qualifying event, 4-H youth from Oneida, Madison, Herkimer, Oswego and Onondaga counties shared their knowledge, loves, and interests by presenting on various topics in front of volunteer evaluators:

Amy Mills, from Canastota

Katie Wilson, from Canastota

Nancy Rider, from Oriskany

Elaine Edwards, from Remsen

Sue Bristol, from Parish

All participating youth earned a blue, red or white ribbon and the top five juniors and seniors were recognized with rosettes.

Representing Oneida County:

• Luna Pauley, from New Hartford, did a demonstration/illustrated talk on The Wonderful World of Silkies.

• Eva Stone, from Clinton, did a demonstration/illustrated talk on Wonderful Whippets.

• Madeline Jones, from Clinton did a recitation on Sing Ho for Piglet and earned a Junior fifth place rosette.

• P. Ella Larry, from Rome did a demonstration/illustrated talk on The Flip Turn and earned a Senior second place rosette.

• Ruth Dibble, from West Winfield did a demonstration/illustrated talk on Preparing and Showing a Dairy Heifer and earned a Junior third place rosette.

Youths interested in becoming involved in Oneida County 4-H or adults interested in volunteering should call 315-736-3394, ext. 105.
