MARCY — Community members, faculty, staff, and students will once again have a chance to volunteer for and support a multi-day regional robotics competition at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in March for grades 9-12.

The Central New York 2020 Regional FIRST Robotics Competition is returning to the Wildcat Fieldhouse at SUNY Poly’s Marcy campus on March 18-21, the college announced. FIRST refers to For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.

The annual event draws as many as 3,000 people to the campus where they participate in or watch the robot vs. robot matches. SUNY Poly said students in grades 9-12 will come from around the world with families, mentors, and volunteers in competing for honors, recognition, and a chance to earn a spot at the World Championship event in Detroit, Mich., in April.

Event sponsors, team mentors, and both technical and non-technical volunteers are sought. Parties interested in being a sponsor can contact Andrea LaGatta of the SUNY Poly Foundation at andrea.lagatta@sunypoly.edu. Those interested in becoming a volunteer, or who have questions about the event, can contact event Planning Committee Chair Laurie Hartman at laurie.hartman@sunypoly.edu.

“On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff at SUNY Poly, our campus is thrilled to host this wonderful event, which has become an annual tradition that offers hands-on, experiential learning to thousands of students from across the globe,” said SUNY Poly interim President Grace Wang.

SUNY Poly cited positive impacts for FIRST Robotics Competition participants. Among them: learning from professional engineers; mastering STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) skills; using sophisticated software, hardware, and power tools; improving teamwork, interpersonal, management, planning, and communication skills.
