Starting this fall, there will be at-large participants in the state high school football playoffs.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association approved using a seven-year rotation to fill byes in regional games where necessary, for Class AA, A and D.
In the first year, the at-large teams will come from Section III.
The Association’s Executive Committee approved this and other changes at its quarterly meeting in Saratoga Springs on Thursday.
Also approved was a revision of the sports season length, beginning in the 2020-2021 school year.
All seasons will be reduced by one week, except for football which will have its state championship moved to the weekend after Thanksgiving; all other championship dates will remain the same.
The format of the girls tennis championship will be revised to a Thursday through Saturday format, and it was additionally approved to use an at-large rotation to fill byes in the state tournament. A two-year experiment was approved to eliminate the consolation bracket and add medal playoffs to the top eight participants in the girls tennis championships. Boys tennis will also use an at-large rotation to fill byes in the state championship tournament. The three-year regional rotation in girls lacrosse was also approved.
