March 30 BOCES workshop aimed to assist potential school board candidates

NEW HARTFORD — A workshop on “How to Become a School Board of Education Candidate and What to Expect if Elected” will be held March 30 at 9 a.m. at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, 4747 Middle Settlement Road.

Registration and a continental breakfast will be from 8:30-9 a.m.

There is no charge for the workshop program, according to the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer School Boards Institute (OMH-SBI) which is sponsoring the event.

Among agenda items for the workshop:

Process and timeline to become a candidate;

A panel discussion by school board members from the region and a presentation on such topics as campaigning, time commitment, publicity for candidacy, and targeting voters;

School board members’ roles and responsibilities;

Communicating with school superintendents;

Questions, comments and closing at 11:45 a.m. with OMH-SBI President Michael Head.

Board of Education elections will be held May 21.
