Lois Marie Lemmer


San FRANCISCO, CA — Lois Marie Lemmer passed away peacefully on the morning of February 20, 2019 in the company of her husband John and dog Izzy after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. She was a born in Berwyn, IL on October 29, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Henry and Eleanor (Laskowski) Hlavaty. She graduated from J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero, IL, and received her Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago, Chicago, IL. Lois attended graduate school at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and then earned a Masters in Library Science from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. Lois met her husband, John Francis Lemmer, at Purdue University and they were married on June 5, 1965 in Chicago, IL. During the early years of their marriage, she focused on being a mother and raising her sons. During this time she spent a year in Thailand with her family, where she taught several courses to U.S. Military personnel. 

In 1976 she moved to Clinton, NY with her family where she quickly became an active member of the community. She served as Director of the Kirkland Art Center (KAC) from 1980 to 1982, during difficult times for that organization, and started the KAC Fun Run, which continues to support the Art Center today. Lois volunteered for the Friends of the Kirkland Town Library from 1977-79, and served as the group’s president from 1978-79. Lois began working at the Kirkland Town Library in 1979 as the Youth Services Coordinator and eventually served as its Director from 1993-2011. As director, Lois lead the campaign to renovate and expand the library, and worked to shepherd it into the information age. In addition to her work at the library, she was involved in the community through multiple volunteer activities, including involvement with the A Better Chance (ABC) House in Clinton as a host family and Board Member, as the community representative to Hamilton College’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and as periodic columnist for the Clinton Courier. She was a loving wife, mother, and woman who made her home open to many people over the years. She always made her sons’ friends feel welcome in her home. She also used her warm and loving personality to make patrons at the Kirkland Town Library feel welcome. 

Lois is survived by her husband John, and her three sons and their families: Dan and Kim of Madison, WI and their children Annika, Piper, and Ellery; Jeff and Tammy of Haslett, MI and their children Nick and Katie; and Steve and Molly of San Francisco, CA and their children Tate, Corey, and Huck. She also leaves behind her brother Jim Hlavaty and his wife Jane and Jim’s daughters Connie and Chrissy; her sister Lin Waggener and her husband Rich:, and her brothers-in-law and their families Bill and Suzanne Lemmer, Joe and Sally Lemmer, Tom and Linda Lemmer, and Charlie Lemmer. 

A celebration of Lois’ life will be held at the Kirkland Town Library on July 12, 2019 at 2-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to: Kirkland Town Library, Attn: Anne DeBraggio, 55 1/2 College St, Clinton, NY 13323.
