Library hosts second ‘Read Around the Clock’

KIRKLAND — Kirkland Town Library, 55 1/2 College St., will hold its second annual “Read Around the Clock” from 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23 through 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.

Those interested can now sign up for a time slot to read.

Readers will gather on the library’s front lawn as they read aloud for 25 straight hours. This month’s books include picture and chapter books for children, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and The Martian Chronicles.

Those interested in participating may also sign up on the library’s website, or anyone may just stop by and listen.

AARP Smart Driver Course

Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 5-9 p.m. both nights 

Sign up now

Learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws. Participants can save 10 percent on car insurance and remove 4 points from their license.

Those who register must attend both nights. Cost is $25, $20 for AARP members. Contact the library to sign up.

Zumba Chair Workout

Wednesdays, Aug. 7, 14 and 28 at 3 p.m.

Take Zumba fitness down a notch with a workout in a chair. The program, taught by Helen Dick, is for people with low mobility and includes low impact moves that include music.

Pop-Up Podcasts: Burnt Toast

Thursdays, Aug. 8, 15 and 22 at Noon

At the Clinton Farmer’s Market

Join patrons for a lunchtime conversation about the library’s favorite food podcast, “Burnt Toast.”

Amateur Summer Stock

Thursday, Aug. 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Join rookie performers to read and act in a short play. No experience is necessary. Contact the library to sign up.

Moon Habitats

Monday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m.

Imagine humans are building a colony on the moon. Can you build something out of only newspaper and masking tape that you can fit inside? Try to build the biggest or tallest. For all ages.

Book Signing

Tuesday, Aug 13 at 2 p.m.

Local author Michelle Boehlert will be at the library to read and sign copies of her new book “Skyler’s Travels.” A percentage of sales will be donated to the Kirkland Town Library.

Cookbook Club

Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.

Each month, patrons will make a recipe from a selected cookbook and bring it to a potluck dinner.

This month’s cookbook is “Jamie’s Italy,” by Jamie Oliver. Stop by the library to browse the cookbook, choose a recipe and sign up.

Monday Movies

Aug. 19 and 26 at 2 p.m.

Watch a recent release on the big screen. Popcorn will be served. For movie titles, check the library’s website.

Weekly Story Times

Note: there are no story times the week of Aug. 5

Wigglers for ages 0-2 on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Movers & Shakers for ages 2-5 on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Farmer’s Market Story Time for all ages on Thursdays at 11 a.m. on the Village Green
