Pennsylvania player wins bocce tourney

Frank Anelli of Pennsylvania won the eighth annual Budweiser Men’s Super Singles Bocce Tournament at the Toccolana Club over the weekend.

Anelli went undefeated over the course of the double-elimination tournament. Rome’s Bernie Colangelo came in second and Rome’s Greg Puccio came in third. Paul Louis III of Rome came in fourth and Amsterdam’s Tony Porcello came in fifth.

The coed doubles bocce fundraiser tournament for the Rome Free Academy girls lacrosse team is scheduled for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at the Toccolana Club. A sign-up sheet is available at the club.

Mattie records first hole-in-one

Rome’s Mike Mattie recorded his first hole-in-one on Monday during the Stanwix Monday Morning League at Rome Country Club.

Mattie hit a 9-iron from 135 yards out on the par-3 14th hole.

Witnesses were John Huther, Lou Verdgeline and Tom Billman.
