Cole Donnelly homered and drove in two runs for Smith Post as the Romans picked up their third straight District V American Legion baseball win with a 6-3 victory over host Sherrill Post in nine innings.
Entering the top of the seventh trailing 2-1, Smith scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead and Sherrill tied it up in the bottom half. After a scoreless eighth inning, Smith scored three in the top of the ninth to take the lead for good.
Riley Brawdy went 3-for-5 for Smith with two RBIs and Justin Swavely also drove in a run. Swavely earned the win on the mound, tossing three innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits while walking one and striking out six. Derek Switzer started the game for Rome, working six innings, giving up two runs on three hits, he walked four and struck out four.
Zach Nell took the loss for Sherrill, working 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits. Nell also doubled for Sherrill. Tyler Rotach, Alex Kipp and Jorden Barlow all had one RBI for Sherrill in the loss.
Smith, which improved to 3-1, next plays at home on Thursday night when it hosts Love Post at 6. Sherrill falls to 2-3 and returns to the field on Sunday at 1 when it is home for Ilion Post.
Oriskany edges Clonan
Mike Sweeney hit a pinch-hit single for Oriskany Post to score Rickey Phelps in the sixth inning which proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win over Clonan Post at DeLutis Field.
Jake Beer picked up the win on the mound, tossing a three-hitter, complete game shutout with eight strikeouts.
Oriskany is 1-1 and plays again tonight on the road against Adrean Post at Utica College at 6.
Helmuth-Ingalls lost to New Hartford Post 5-2.
