VERNON — Matt Sheppard won his second modified race of the season at Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday night, moving him into second place on the all-time wins list.
Sheppard is tied with Dale Planck for second and only trails Stewart Friesen.
From his fifth place starting position, Sheppard moved into the top spot on the third lap and he quickly pulled away from the rest of the field.
After a lap 32 caution, Sheppard pulled right back out in front. With Sheppard well in the lead, Marc Johnson and Peter Britten battled it out for second place and Britten won that battle.
Marc Johnson, Erick Rudolph and Billy Dunn rounded out the top five.
In the sportsman main event, Matt Janczuk won his third race of the season with Kyle Inman, Chris Cunningham, Alan Frank and Andrew Buff rounding out the top five.
Shane Henderson took the lead on lap two but was overpowered by Pete Stefanski on lap five and Stefanski cruised to the win in the pro stock feature finish. Stefanski came from his sixth place starting spot to get the lead and dominate the non-stop race. Henderson, Mike Welch, Travis Welch and Bill Knapp rounded out the top five.
In a makeup race from July 22, Scott Mallette won the rookie sportsman race.
Racing returns to the speedway next Sunday, with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing beginning at 7.
