Peter F. Cannavo, associate professor of government and director of environmental studies at Hamilton College, will present “Civic Republicanism, Non-Domination, and Self-Government: Informing a New Progressive Politics,” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at The Other Side, 2011 Genesee St., Utica.
Cannavo asks: “How might an almost forgotten political tradition be relevant for progressive politics in 2017?” The civic republican tradition, which goes back to Aristotle and Machiavelli, emphasizes self-government, civic virtue and non-domination, he noted. “Civic republicanism influenced the American founders but was eventually superseded by liberal individualism. Can a civic republican revival help inform a coherent political vision uniting the disparate strands of today’s progressive movement?”
The talk is free to the public. For information contact Kim Domenico at 315-735-4825 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
