Portman stars in sci-fi-horror film


Cinema Capitol, 230 W. Dominick St., will present the science fiction horror movie “Annihilation” from Friday, March 9-Thursday, March 15.

Written and directed by Alex Garland, “Annihilation” is based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. The film stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac, and follows a group of female military scientists who enter “The Shimmer,” a mysterious quarantined zone that is full of mutating landscapes and creatures. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscape and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

Rogerebert.com notes of “Annihilation” “In this recent wave of sci-fi films, it’s one of the best.” The Detroit News describes the movie as “A beautiful, riveting sci-fi mystery that annihilates any notion of what a big-budget studio thriller can be.”

“Annihilation” runs 115 minutes and is rated R (for violence, bloody images, language, and some sexuality). Admission is $7 , $6 for students and military, and $5 for Capitol Friends. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 4:15 and 7:15 p.m., Sunday at 1:15 and 4:15 p.m., and Monday-Thursday at 7:15 p.m.. The Friday 4:15 and Sunday 1:15 show times will include captions for the hearing-impaired.
