New regs force closure of N. James St. gas station, says owner Buell Fuels

Buell Fuels has closed its gas station on North James Street.

New regulations by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) taking effect in October 2018 “will force the current owner of that station to spend $75,000-$100,000 to upgrade their equipment or dig up the tanks. This is unfortunate as they passed a 2016 DEC inspection and currently do not leak,” the company stated.

“In the six months that we were selling gas and diesel at the station we spent time landscaping, painting and cleaning up the site. We became the main sponsor for the YMCA Boxing Club and set up the City of Rome Police Department with discounted fuel for their vehicles. The police presence at the station helped clean up some of the criminal activity that was a growing concern for the area,” the company noted.

“Buell Fuels will continue to look for opportunities to assist the City of Rome in their efforts to revitalize the city,” the company added.
