Lena M. Dickson, 70, of Oswego Rd., Rome, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Rome Memorial Hospital.

She was born on August 26, 1947, in Rome, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Crippen Smothers. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy.

On April 26, 1980, she was united in marriage to her long-time love, Sam Dickson, Jr., in Mattydale.

Lena was employed as a nurse’s aide for the former Stonehedge Nursing Home and she had previously worked at James Square Nursing Home in Syracuse.

Lena was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed reading, painting ceramics, and learning about Native American culture. She was always known to have a stash of chocolate somewhere.

Surviving besides her loving husband, Sam; are five children, Kimberly Smothers, Tammy Mosley, Paula (Les) Darling, Janet Santmyer, and Sam J. Dickson, Sr., all of Rome; her former daughter-in-law Gladys Dickson, of Utica; five step-children, Sam Dickson, III, Christine Dickson, Linda Crouse, Gayle Westmoreland, and David Dickson; a brother, Joseph Smothers (Linda Streetman), of New Hartford; seventeen grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Lena was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary; her brother, Thomas Smothers; and a granddaughter, Teri Rogers.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Family and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
