The city renewed its relationship with the Rome Main Streets Alliance for a 2018 beautification initiative. The deal is for $65,000, and is for services, planning, consulting and community outreach.
Target projects and areas of particular concern include:
- The clean-out and re-establishment of new flower beds surrounding the Peter Gansevoort statue in Gansevoort Park.
- Simplification, cost savings and maximum impact through the use of fewer, hardier, more drought-resistant and colorful plant materials.
- Dig and divide perennials such as the hostas lining the walkways in both Gansevoort and Veterans Parks.
- Replacement of concrete planters with self-watering planters from EarthPlanters and movement of the concrete planters to the waterfront navigation center area.
- Replacement of plastic inserts in the metal Victor Stanley James Street corridor planters with larger, self-watering inserts from EarthPlanters in order to minimize the labor costs associated with watering.
- Early planting of hanging baskets through cooperation with a local greenhouse in order to maximize impact for Memorial Day weekend and to ensure longevity.
- Weekly pre-season inspection of seedlings in order to ensure high-quality plants and best-case viability when transferring to planters and beds.
The group also intends to implement a comprehensive recycling program to extend throughout the Arts District along West Dominick Street. “To that end, we would like to help coordinate the purchase of outdoor recycling receptacles for the District,” the proposal stated. “We feel that this is especially important with the advent of the Downtown Market at City Hall Green and the hopeful increase in foot traffic from the Fort throughout the District.”
The city funding would cover design and printing of the tourism brochure and map, 62 self-watering drop-and-grow inserts for the Victor Stanley planters and 15 self-watering large urban vase planters for the Arts District.
Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo, who chairs the board, said that the self-watering planters and the brochure were both major success last year that the city wants to expand.
