Arc Herkimer hosts author on parenting autism and other special needs


Arc Herkimer has seats available at two upcoming events featuring Nancy Musarra, an author, clinical psychologist, and mother of a child with special needs, on Oct. 4 and 5.

The events are free and open to the public. Musarra will present her book, “The New Normal: 7 Things to Know as Your Care for & Love a Child with Special Needs” rom 5-7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Herkimer High School, 801 W. German Street in Herkimer.

Musarra will also present “A Look at Criminal Justice and Legal Proceeding Related to Autism and Other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Herkimer College, 100 Reservoir Road in Herkimer. This workshop will examine criminal justice and legal proceedings related to autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Through case examples and group participation, attendees will learn tactics for encountering someone who is stimming, hallucinating, naked, hesitating or in crisis. It’s intended to help parents and health and law enforcement professionals gain a working knowledge of these disorders.
