BOONVILLE — Albert J. Backer, 74, of James Street passed away October 11, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born in Rome, N.Y. on January 28, 1943, a son of Stanley and Charlotte (Lottie) Lisowski Backer. He grew up on the family farm on the East Ava Road and attended Boonville High School. He was united in marriage to Lucille M. Smith on February 19, 1966 at St. Mary’s Church, West Leyden. The couple settled in West Leyden before moving to Boonville in 1975. Mrs. Backer died June 23, 2007. Albert was employed at Strandflex Cable Company in Oriskany for 30 years retiring in 2005. Albert enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and bowling.
Surviving are his children, James and Kelly Backer, Michael and Colleen Backer and Wendi and Mark Croniser, all of Boonville; nine grandchildren, Ryan and Trevor Backer, Lucas, Nicholas and Anna Kafka, Dustin Backer, Jacob, Nathan and Nevan Croniser; three great grandchildren, Aiden, Aubree and Adalynn; special life-long friends, Albin (Sonny) Rucki, deceased, Sheila Rucki, Rome, who cared for Albert for the last few years; brother, Horace “Babe” (Carol) Backer, Ava; four sisters, Brenda (Dick) Witzigman, Ava, Linda Underwood, Rome, Shirley Hunt, Camden and Lorraine (Steve) Gardinier, Rome; step father-in-law, Glenn Walker, Lee Center; brother-in-law, Ronald (Patricia) Smith, California and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, mother-in-law, Rosemary Seelman Smith Walker and a brother-in-law, Brian Underwood.
A funeral service will be held Monday, October 16, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post Street, Boonville. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
