Smith and Sherrill headed for second-round matchup
Derek Switzer threw a complete game as Smith Post delivered a 9-1 rout over Adrean Post in the first round of the District V American Legion double-elimination playoff tournament on Sunday at Rome Free Academy Stadium.
Switzer gave up seven hits and one run while striking out four. He also issued three walks.
Leading Smith offensively was Gavin Chambers, who went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double and three RBIs. Zack Taylor also went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Brett Granger drove in two runs.
Moving on, Smith will head to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School tonight to take on Sherrill Post while Adrean will face elimination as they host Ilion tonight at Utica College. Both games start at 5:15.
On Tuesday, the District V double-elimination tourney moves to Murnane Field in Utica beginning at 3 p.m., featuring the loser of Smith/Sherrill and the winner of Utica/Whitestown.
The championship game is scheduled to be held on Thursday night at 8 o’clock and if a second game is needed, it will be held Friday night at 8 p.m.
Sherrill cruises to win
In another District V playoff game, Sherrill dominated Ilion in five innings, winning 12-2.
Connor VanDreason got the win for Sherrill, allowing one run on four hits and struck out three in 3 1/3 innings.
In relief, Anthony Farina gave up two hits in 12/3 innings.
Nate Palmer went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs, while Zachary Nell and Blake VanDreason each had three RBIs. Andrew Roden and Blake VanDreason both homered.
Oriskany moves on
Kyle Liddy threw a complete game and Oriskany advanced to the next round with a 2-1 victory over Utica.
Liddy gave up one run on five hits and struck out nine en route to the victory. Aaron Drake went 2-for-3 with a double and Shamis Lasher went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Up next, Oriskany will host Love Post at Oriskany High School. Facing elimination, Utica will take on host Whitestown at SUNY Poly. Both games are at 5:15.

Love defeated defending District V champ Whitestown 2-1 in the first round.
