The World Series officially gets underway on Friday at 5 p.m. with first-round matches in both the open and women’s divisions immediately following the opening ceremony.
This year’s tournament includes a record 153 teams, including 111 in the open division and 42 in the women’s division.
The 2017 tourney attracted 144 squads. With the large field of teams, tourney organizers have scheduled the last set of opening-night matches for Friday to get started at midnight.
More than $30,000 in prize money will be awarded to winning teams, with a $7,000 prize for the open division champions and $2,200 for the winners of the women’s division.
The tourney continues through the weekend, leading up to the finals on Sunday.
The schedule on Sunday also includes the “Rest of the Best” tournament, sponsored by Turning Stone Resort and Casino. That event is open to the first 16 teams eliminated from the open division and the first eight teams eliminated from the women’s division.
