Sectional champions in running for state crowns
Area runners will gather at Section V’s Wayne High School on Saturday for the state cross country meet.
Heading to Ontario Center will be the Section III Class C champion Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys team and the Section III Class D girls champion South Lewis.
Also running will be Oriskany’s Sam Sharlow, Adirondack’s Tyler Fauvelle, the pair of Lizzy Lucason and Morgan Lucason from Camden, Delaney Brewer from VVS, freshman Jade Dening from Remsen and Eva Borton and Taylor Harvey from Clinton.
According to tullyrunners.com, VVS senior runner Owen Walker is ranked second in the state among Class C boys runners. Walker was the first overall finisher in last week’s Section III Class C race, completing the course in 16 minutes, 32 seconds.
Other runners for VVS running at the state meet include Owen Rose, Spencer Walker, Trevor Kline, Robbie Vandresar, Joseph Guertin, Andrew Wright, Matt Palmer and Damien Muessig.
Fauvelle enters the state meet ranked No. 4 in the state in Class C. Fauvelle finished second overall behind Walker in last week’s Section III run with a time of 16:51.9.
Sharlow enters the state meet ranked No. 16 in the state for Class D runner. The Oriskany junior finished sixth in the Section III meet last week with a time of 17.18.8.
The South Lewis girls team enters the New York State meet ranked No. 3 in Class D with runner Hannah Ielfield ranked No. 3 for the Class D girls. Hannah Ielfield finished second in the Section III Class D race, running a 19:18.0. Teammate Lexi Bernard is ranked No. 8 in the state. Hali Ielfield is ranked No. 10 for the Falcons and finished third in the Section III Class D race, running a time of 19:24.0.
Other runners that will be running for the South Lewis girls team include Marsella Ventura, Morgan Feisthamel, Abby Durgan and Chloe Seller.
Remsen runner Dening is ranked No. 26 in the state in his class.
Lizzy Lucason finished third for Camden in the girls Class B race, completing the run in 20:08.2 and her sister, Morgan, finished seventh for the Blue Devils with a time of 20:49.7. This marks the second consecutive year that the Lucason sisters have represented Camden at the state meet.
Both of the Lucason sisters were happy that they both qualified for the state meet after their runs at the Section III meet.
Brewer qualified for the State meet for the Red Devils by finishing sixth in the Section III Class C girls meet. Brewer ran a 20:37.7 for the Red Devils.
“I’m really nervous for states,” Brewer said after the Section III meet. “I didn’t think that I’d make it.”
Eva Borton finished first overall in the Girls Class C race at the Section III meet last week for Clinton, running a time of 19:02.6. Teammate Taylor Harvey finished fourth, running a time of 20:15.5.
“It means a lot to me to go to states,” Harvey said. “I couldn’t have done this without my team.”
