Rome golfer Cupp captures state Mid-Amateur crown
LOUDONVILLE — The Rome Country Club’s Lauren Cupp won her first-ever New York State Mid-Amateur championship at Schuyler Meadows Club on Friday by a single stroke.
Cupp shot a steady 76 in the final round to be crowned the ninth NYS Mid-Amateur champion.
Cupp began the day with birdies on the first two holes, both par-5.
She shot an opening-round 80 on Wednesday and added a two-over 75 on Thursday, finishing with a total 231.
The two-shot lead was enough to edge her past runner-up Julie Murphy of Brookfield Country Club, who had three straight birdies on the back nine, but bogeyed on Hole 16.
Cupp’s husband Wes, who is currently ranked the No. 1 ranked speed golfer in the world, served as her caddy.
Cupp was the co-champion of the rain-shortened Rome City Women’s Amateur Golf Tournament last year at the Rome Country Club, sharing the crown with Katie Veasey.
It was the seventh time Cupp won or shared the city championship.
