Playoff-bound Comets end regular season with victory
The Utica Comets split a pair of American Hockey League games on Saturday and Sunday, losing on the road 3-1 to Belleville before winning at home against Binghamton in overtime, 4-3.
The Comets had opened the weekend with a 2-1 home loss to Syracuse on Friday night.
The Comets have qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs and will meet the Toronto Marlies in a first-round best-of-five series set to begin with a pair of games on Saturday Sunday and at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.
The Comets closed out their regular season on Sunday as Lukas Jasek scored the game-winning goal against the Devils with 1:31 remaining in overtime to earn the win at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Wacey Hamilton and Ashton Sautner registered the assists.
Jonathan Dahlen scored his first AHL goal earlier in the game, while Patrick Wiercioch and Michael Chaput scored the other goals for Utica.
Thatcher Demko finished with 30 saves in net for the Comets to improve his record to 25-13-7. With the win, Demko became the Comets all-time leader in wins in a single season as well as career wins.
The Comets’ power play went 1-for-6, while the penalty kill allowed one goal in six attempts.
On Saturday, Willie Corrin scored the lone goal against the Senators. The goal was Corrin’s first as a Comet and the assist for Kole Lind was his first professional point.
Utica goalie Richard Bachman finished with 24 saves and his record fell to 13-13-5.
The Comets’ power play went 0-3, while the penalty kill did not allow a goal in two attempts.
The Comets open the Calder Cup playoffs on the road against Toronto next weekend before returning to the Utica Memorial Auditorium for Game 3 on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m.

• Game 2: Sunday, April 22 at the Ricoh Coliseum at 4 p.m.;
• Game 3: Wednesday, April 25 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m.;
• Game 4: Friday, April 27 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m., if necessary;
• Game 5: Sunday, April 29 at the Ricoh Coliseum at 4 p.m., if necessary
