Phelps races to win in 100-lapper at Utica-Rome
VERNON — Jimmy Phelps won the 100-lap Freedom Fighter 100 Super DIRTcar Modified Series race on Sunday night at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Phelps held a quick pace, leading Danny Johnson, Pat Ward, Billy Dunn and Alan Johnson.
On lap 13, the caution flag came out, but Phelps still held the lead. Stewart Friesen made a push, coming from 11th place to sixth.
After 20 laps, Phelps still held the lead, with Johnson, Friesen, Dunn and Larry Wright tailing him. After a second caution on lap 29 put Friesen right next to Phelps on the restart, the two battled for the lead position for the next 20 laps with Friesen grabbing the lead on lap 44 and Phelps retaking it a lap later.
On lap 70, Friesen’s bid to win came to an end when he slipped off the track after he jumped the cushion in turns one and two. Friesen dropped to the fourth spot.
Phelps pulled ahead of the pack to secure the win, his first since 2016. Danny Johnson, Erick Rudolph, Max McLaughlin, Matt Shepard, Billy Dunn, Larry Wright, Pat Ward, Marc Johnson and Peter Britten rounded out the top 10.
