Moffett scores 1,000th point during VVS win

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill junior Davey Moffett scored his 1,000th career point during Saturday’s non-league 51-49 win against Holland Patent at the inaugural Mohawk Valley Basketball Classic at Utica College.

Moffett had 17 points and also contributed 14 rebounds and dished out two assists in the win. Jake Engler tallied 12 points and Dewey Roden had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Red Devils improved to 8-4 overall and remained 2-3 in the Tri-Valley League.

The Golden Knights were paced by Collin Litz and Jake Storsberg, who tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively. The setback puts Holland Patent at a 2-8 overall record keeps them at a 1-2 mark in the Center State Conference.

Holland Patent returns to action on Tuesday night when the Golden Knights head to Whitesboro for a non-league contest at 7. VVS will host Central Valley Academy in a TVL makeup game on Friday at 7 o’clock.

Powell pours in 34 in win

Rome Free Academy delivered a 95-88 home victory over Baldwinsville on Saturday for its ninth win of the season.

Ethan Powell poured out a game-high 34 points for the Black Knights and pulled down three rebounds. Dante Cummings added 24 points and Gavin Mosher posted a double-double, recording 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Zach Wilbert led RFA defensively with 12 boards.

​The Black Knights improve to a 9-2 overall record with the win and remain 4-1 in the TVL.

Jacob Marshall and Casey Pluff led the Bees with 28 points and 25 points, respectively. The Bees dropped to 5-4 overall.

RFA will be off for more than a week, returning to action on Tuesday, Jan. 17, when they head to Oneida for a TVL matchup slated to start at 7 p.m.

Whitesboro tops Oneida

Oneida went down to a 51-43 Tri-Valley League loss to Whitesboro on Friday despite a game-high 18 points from Alex Vaccaro.

Seven of Vaccaro’s 18 points came from the free-throw line. Jacob Vaccaro was next in scoring for Oneida with six points.

Tom Morreale scored 13 points to lead the way for 6-4, 2-2 Whitesboro.

Oneida, 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the TVL, will travel to Proctor High on Tuesday for another league matchup at 7 p.m.
