Hole-in-one helps Campbell capture golf crown in Maine
MANCHESTER, Maine — A hole-in-one helped Rome native Matt Campbell win his second Charlie’s Maine Open championship on Wednesday.
Campbell defeated Peter French of Franklin, Mass. in a sudden-death playoff hole at Augusta Country Club to take home the first-place check of $9,000. Campbell won his first Charlie’s Maine Open crown in 2015 for his first professional golf victory.
Campbell entered Wednesday’s play at 4-under par and he birdied hole No. 1 and hit a hole-in-one on hole No. 2 to move to 7-under thru two holes.
Campbell used a 9-iron to hit his hole-in-one.
It was his first hole-in-one in tournament play.
Campbell had one bogey over the course of the two-day event and he played bogey free on Wednesday.
At the turn, both Campbell and French were 8-under and Campbell took the lead with a birdie on the 10th hole.
He also birdied holes 14 and 16 to reach 11-under.
Last year, Campbell played in the U.S. Open on the PGA Tour.
